Demeclocycline (Declomycin)

Demeclocycline is used by patients on the Marshall ProtocolA curative medical treatment for chronic inflammatory disease. Based on the Marshall Pathogenesis. (MP). Derived from a strain of Streptomyces aureofaciens, demeclocycline is a rarely used form of tetracycline. A member of the tetracycline family of antibiotics, demeclocycline is chemically similar to minocyclineBacteriostatic antibiotic used by Marshall Protocol patients.. Only the substitution of a chlorine group for a methyl group distinguishes demeclocycline from minocycline. For the MP, demeclocycline is used, because it targets different types of L-form bacteriaDifficult-to-culture bacteria that lack a cell wall and are not detectable by traditional culturing processes. Sometimes referred to as cell wall deficient bacteria. than minocycline.

Demeclocycline is available in 300mg and 150mg tablets, the latter being the maximum dose recommended.

An older drug, demeclocycline is sometimes hard to find. Also, it is expensive, in the United States among other places. At least for some, demeclocycline provokes stronger reactions than minocycline. Incremental amounts of 150mg of demeclocycline can be used in any of the various three-antibiotic combinations.

Demeclocycline is sometimes referred to by the brand names Declomycin, Declostatin, or Ledermycin.

Buying demeclocycline

The price of demeclocycline varies according to country. Demeclocycline is expensive – up to $8 a tablet – for patients in the United States. Patients for whom cost is a factor may choose to use minocycline instead.

Demeclocycline comes in 150mg and 300mg capsules. The lower dose may be preferred for some as it makes it easier to divide for the initial doses.

Patients with insurance coverage can maximize their medication insurance benefit if their physician will order the larger dose and a larger quantity to “take as directed.”

Many of the sources for olmesartan including International Pharmacy can also order demeclocycline.

In Canada

Access to demeclocycline in Canada is now only possible through the Special Access Program (SAP). A Special Access Form and instructions needs to be filled out by the requesting physician.

According to the instruction sheet, the SAP “provides access to nonmarketed drugs for practitioners treating patients with serious or life-threatening conditions when conventional therapies have failed, are unsuitable, or unavailable.”

Besides info on the doctor and patient (age/sex/diagnosis), the following 3 points must be addressed under Clinical Rationale:

-Provide specific information about patient’s medical history including other therapies considered, ruled out and/or failed to achieve an adequate response.

  1. Why is this drug the best choice for your patient?
  2. List the data, resources or references in your possession, with respect to the use, safety and efficacy of the drug, that support your decision to prescribe the drug.

Note: The drug can only be sent to inpatient pharmacies (i.e. a hospital pharmacy), not retail or outpatient pharmacies.”

Moreover: “Specify the exact amount of drug requested (e.g. number of tabs, vials, units, etc.). Your request will be returned by fax if the amount of drug required is not clearly stated; the SAP will not calculate the quantity. A maximum quantity equivalent to a six month supply will be considered for drugs used for chronic indications.”

And finally, the Doc has to take on full responsibility for administering, agree to provide a report on the dug use if requested, blah, blah, blah.

A lot of work for a reluctant doctor. If you live close to the border, it might be easier to try and get a prescription from your doctor and have it filled in the U.S. – although I understand that demeclocycline is quite expensive there.

Demeclocycline comes in 150mg and 300mg tablets. The maximum recommended dose is 150mg. The maximum recommended frequency is every other day.

As with other MP antibiotics, patients are advised to increase their dose of demeclocycline incrementally, which insures safety and that a range of pathogens are being targeted.

The standard amount to increase demeclocycline is 37.5mg, which is 1/4 of a 150mg pill or 1/8 of a 300mg pill.

Patients concerned about intolerable immunopathologyAn unbearable or unsafe severity of bacterial die-off reaction. can increment their dose by 25mg, which is 1/6 of a 150mg pill or 1/12 of a 300mg pill.

One-quarter of the 150mg dose demeclocycline can be used similarly to one-quarter of the 100mg dose mino in combinations.

Patients should take demeclocycline on an empty stomach, drinking a full glass of water with each dose. Take demeclocycline at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Try to avoid taking demeclocycline with food, especially dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream because food slightly reduces blood levels.

Patients who have gastric upset may take demeclocycline with a small snack.

Demeclocycline should be taken at the same time as any other every-other-day antibiotics.

Possible Phase One substitute for minocycline

Many patients have reported that demeclocycline is more potent than minocycline. However, some patients who have had trouble ramping minocycline in Phase One have been able to tolerate demeclocycline when they could not tolerate minocycline.

Combining demeclocycline with other Marshall Protocol antibiotics

In later stages of the treatments, demeclocycline may be combined with other MP antibiotics in the following fashion:

Because demeclocycline and minocycline are similar, using the antibiotics in the same combination may offer a less severe immunopathological reactionA temporary increase in disease symptoms experiences by Marshall Protocol patients that results from the release of cytokines and endotoxins as disease-causing bacteria are killed. than any of the other combinations.

Demeclocycline's effect on low sodium

Demeclocycline is used rarely and primarily to treat low sodium and only if the hyponatremia is caused by Sydrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone (SIADH). The antibiotic works by preventing the action of a hormone on the kidney that causes low sodium levels. If patients' sodium is normal or low for other reasons, demeclocycline will not alter their sodium level.
